Die Marke Essie startete 1981 mit zwölf Nagellackfarben in Las Vegas. Die Marke „Essie“ trägt den Vornamen der Frau, die sie ins Leben gerufen hat. Der Name dieser Frau? Essie Weingarten. Die 1949 geborene Unternehmerin hatte sich schon früh für schöne Nägel interessiert und soll bei ihren ersten Schritten als Geschäftsfrau unter anderem Tänzerinnen in den Hotels von Las Vegas mit ihren Lacken versorgt haben. Sie entwarf auch die qualitativ hochwertigen Nagellacke in den zwölf Farben, die 1981 in Las Vegas präsentiert wurden.
Erfolgreich wurden diese Lacke sehr schnell und das nicht nur in den USA, sondern auch in Japan und Europa. Im Lauf der Zeit wurde Essie zur weltberühmten Marke, die seit 2010 zu L'Oreal gehört. Essie Weingarten arbeitete nach der Übernahme bei Essie als Kreativ-Direktorin. L'Oreal beschreibt Essie als eine Marke mit einer mehrfach ausgezeichneten Rezeptur, „die nicht splittert und die Nägel lange schützt“ und bei der jede einzelne Nagellackfarbe „ihren einzigartigen und eigenwilligen Namen“ besitzt.&nbsp;

Schon lange kann die Marke Essie auf Prominenz verweisen, die Essie Produkte gerne nutzt.
