Female founders in the beauty industry

8 March is International Women's Day, and we would like to celebrate it with you. For several decades now, this day has been used worldwide to draw attention to women's rights and gender equality. As the beauty industry and its beauty helpers are mainly focussed on a female target group or female readers, I would like to use this occasion to introduce you to some great female founders in the beauty industry. The best thing about it: you can find all their brands in our range.

We celebrate International Women's Day

International Women's Day, also known as International Women's Day, is celebrated annually on 8 March. This date was finalised in 1921 by a resolution of the Second International Conference of Communist Women in Moscow. The day, which aims to strengthen women's rights and honour their contributions to society, originated in the labour movement in the early 20th century. As injustice against women still prevails in many countries around the world today - even in Switzerland, there is no real equality in all areas of life - it is all the more important to stand up for women's rights and celebrate women and their strengths. We at Perfecthair.ch are particularly proud to work in a very diverse organisation and with a majority of women. And did you know that we have a female CEO?

What is special about beauty brands that were founded by women?

Brands run by women - especially in the fashion, beauty and lifestyle sectors - are currently experiencing an upswing, for which there are several reasons:

  • Innovative approaches and authenticity: many women are bringing their personal experiences and needs to their brands, resulting in innovative and authentic products. For example, Danessa Myricks founded her beauty brand in order to be able to develop exactly the right products that she was missing in her work as a make-up artist.
  • Focus on sustainability and health: Women-led brands often attach great importance to sustainable and healthy ingredients.
  • Growing importance of self-care: With the increasing importance of self-love and wellbeing, the cosmetics industry is becoming more and more important. Women play a central role here because they develop products that are tailored to the needs of their (future) customers.
  • The need for role models and identification: Customers can identify better with women who meet them at eye level and are in a similar life situation - same age, children, skin and hair needs.

Female founders in the beauty industry in our shop

We are delighted that we at Perfecthair.ch have a large number of beauty brands that were founded by women. I would like to introduce you to the most important ones here, but not without sharing this wonderful quote from the great mother of female founders in the beauty industry, Estée Lauder:

"Never underestimate any woman’s desire for beauty."

Estée Lauder: one of the first female founders in the beauty industry

Today, the Esteé Lauder company comprises not only the beauty brand of the same name, but an entire empire that includes brands such as Aveda, Clinique, Bumble and bumble, MAC and many more. The foundation for this global company was laid by Esteé Lauder, who was born Josephine Esther Mentzer in Queens, New York in 1908. She discovered her passion for creams through her uncle, who was a chemist and set up his laboratory in a hut in her family's garden.

When selling her products, it was always important to her to explain them to her customers in detail and to show them the results on herself. She was one of the first entrepreneurs to use free samples to convince buyers of the effects of her products. The Estée Lauder company, which she founded in 1946 together with her husband Joseph and into which her two sons automatically grew. Today, the brand continues to embody timeless beauty and affordable luxury, preserving the legacy of its visionary founder, who passed away in 2004.

Annemarie Börlind: Pionierin der Naturkosmetik

Annemarie Lindner

In 1959, Annemarie Lindner founded Börlind GmbH together with her husband Walter and Hermann Börner. Annemarie was inspired by her own skin problems and the healing effect of a herbal mask. Despite being expropriated several times in the GDR and fleeing to the West, she consistently pursued her vision of natural cosmetics. With her brand ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND, she set new standards in systematic beauty care and established herself as a pioneer of natural cosmetics. Even today, her vision is still the most important guiding principle in the company.

Bobbi Brown sets new standards for natural make-up shades

Her vision of natural beauty and her desire to develop make-up products that emphasise the natural beauty of every woman led Bobbi Brown to found her brand Bobbi Brown Cosmetics in 1991. With her ten natural lipstick shades, she revolutionised the beauty industry and set new standards for natural make-up shades that did not exist at the time. In 1995, the brand was acquired by Estée Lauder, with Bobbi Brown retaining creative control and spreading her philosophy of natural beauty worldwide - including in various books with make-up tips.

UND GRETEL: luxurious natural cosmetics

Stephanie Dettmann and Christina Roth founded the UND GRETEL brand in Berlin in 2015. Both shared a passion for natural and chemical-free cosmetics. Christina Roth, an experienced make-up artist, wanted to develop products that were both natural and powerful. Stephanie Dettmann had the necessary expertise for founding and marketing after a successful career in the advertising industry. Together they created a luxury cosmetics brand that relies uncompromisingly on natural ingredients and fulfils the highest quality standards.

Jen Atkin: Female Founder of Ouai

Jen Atkin founded the OUAI brand in 2015, which you have probably already discovered here, inspired by her many years of experience as a celebrity hairstylist. She felt the need to develop hair care products that were easy to use and at the same time delivered professional results. With OUAI, she set new standards in hair care and established herself as one of the most influential personalities in the beauty industry.

VBEAUTY by Vanessa Bratschi

The Swiss brand VBeauty offers a wide range of beauty tools and silk products that emphasise the individual beauty of each person. It was founded by Vanessa Bratschi, who brought her passion for high-quality beauty tools and wellness products to the brand. Her innovative products stand for innovative and luxurious beauty products that are both effective and environmentally friendly.

Wella spendet an Pink Ribbon

Beauty with power: To mark International Women's Day 2025, Wella is setting an example and donating to the Pink Ribbon organisation. The brand wants to draw attention to the fight against breast cancer and, in particular, to early breast cancer detection. Discover the world of Wella Haircare now and support breast cancer research with your purchase.

Isn't it nice how many female founders there are in the beauty industry and how many there were decades ago? Women with vision and the desire to make the world a little more beautiful. I find this incredibly inspiring and am sure that many more great brands will be added. And by the way: there are already many more in our shop, such as ABHATI Suisse, reBELLE Beauty, or OQUA, which are well worth discovering. I wish you lots of fun.

💋, Susanna
